Eslarn, as it turns out, is near Bayreuth, the home of the Festspielhaus that Richard Wagner built for performances of his four-opera work, The Ring of the Niebellungen. Many of you have seen (live or in photos) Seattle Opera’s current production, which has come to be known as the “Green Ring” for its naturalistic, forest setting. Allegedly, the forest chosen as the model is the one local to Seattle, in the American Pacific Northwest. Walking through the forest of the Oberpfalz here near Bayreuth however, I disagree. This must be the model! And I expect Fricka to emerge from behind a fir tree any minute.
